Edna Romero, a Santa Clara Potter comes from a very distinguished family in Native American ceramics, the Naranjo Family. A family that has produced innovators, in pueblo ceramics pushing the realm in creativity, individual style and technique.
Among this list of siblings, and extended family are the names of Michael Naranjo (Sculpture), Jody Folwell (Pottery), Nora Naranjo (Clay Sculpture), Roxanne Swentzell (Clay Sculpture), Jody Naranjo (Pottery), Susan Folwell (Pottery), Dusty Naranjo (Pottery).
This family as you can see are among the most recognizable names in Pueblo Ceramics, yet, Edna has chosen to set herself apart by working exclusively with the natural micaceous clay most commonly used by the people of her husband Bennie Romero a Taos Pueblo native. Her technique and skill working with micaceous clay has allowed her to produce some of the finest works of in Native American ceramics. Her ability to produce the finest works becomes evident with each piece presenting itself gracefully through the simplicity of smooth surfaces allowing the subtle glitter of the natural mica to come forth.
Edna over the years has won numerous awards for her work and has been included in several publications among one of those, the book titled "All That Glitters" by Duane Anderson. This book introduced and discussed works by the most reputable potters working with micaceous clay. |
